If you are getting an MBA in launching new businesses the following elements would be covered:
- Product Development
- Sales
- Marketing
- Finance
- Human Resources
- Customer Service
If you desire to know how God uniquely created you would want to cover the following elements:
- Personality Discovery
- Learning Spiritual Gifts
- Abilities Awareness
- Connecting Passion with Ministry
- Experiences of Life
Whether you are getting an MBA in business development or understanding how God has created a person it would take a great deal of time to understand each of the elements individually and collectively. A challenge whether teaching on the different parts of business or how God has uniquely created you is narrowing down what is taught in the time frame allocated and for what is covered to not be overwhelming for the person who is learning.
A possibility to consider in helping SendNowMissions in mobilizing students for the summer is to take one element of the myPLACE assessments and help students understand who they are and how God might use them based on who they are. The DISC personality results would be a good starting place (no pun intended) with the time allocated during the one-day training to help leaders and students know how they will and could be best used in ministry over the summer.
Below are a few exercises focused on:
- Past - Understanding Your Past
- Present - Incorporating Your Past To Serve Today
- Future - Lessons Learned Going Forward
The exercises below could be done prior to students arriving for the one-day training. Students would provide their completed PLACE Profile to leaders and their completed exercises that could be discussed during the allocated time frame (assuming somewhere around an hour allocated) during the one-day training. The goal in the exercises below are to not overwhelm the students, but get them working with their PLACE Profile in one specific area (personality). There is also a suggestion to incorporate the Abilities section in an exercise.

In the section “What Does It Mean To Be A…” (page 9 in workbook) have the students pick two positive and two growth area (negative, but “growth area” sounds much better) qualities that describe them and give an example of a time these qualities have been displayed. Ask the students to keep the explanation short (possibly even a bullet point) as they will have a time to discuss them as part of their orientation training.
Along with looking at qualities that describe them have the students choose one statement from “What Does God Say About My Personality” (page 10 in workbook) and describe an occasion where this statement was true for them.
Leaders: Remember not every word that is listed under each DISC personality type (50 words or phrases for each DISC personality type listed in material) will describe a person. However, the four words (positive and “growth area”, negative) each student chooses will reflect them.
The four words and statement in what God says about them that each students chooses will give great insight into how a student will:
- Serve
- Lead
- Follow
- Communicate
- Interact with leaders
- Interact with team members
- Interact with those being served over the summer
In the sections “How does my Personality affect my leadership roles (page 15 in workbook) and communication style?” (Page 16 in workbook) how do you envision your leadership roles and communication style being an asset to your team this summer as you serve? What might be some potential areas that could be a liability based on understanding your personality and how it is described in “How does my personality affect my leadership roles (page 15) and communication style?” (page 16).
Another exercise to consider incorporating for serving this summer could be to have each student look at the descriptions on page 48 in the workbook for each Ability Description. It will be helpful to tell the students that myPLACE uses abilities as the ENVIRONMENT that is optimal for an individual to flourish in. Ask the students to choose one statement from page 48 in the workbook from their highest Ability score and write how they could envision it being used to help them this summer with their role with SendNowMissions to flourish. Point out they may not resonate with the entire statement and may just choose a few words from each Ability description like: “I prefer unstructured situations” (Artistic) or “I prefer highly ordered activities” (Conventional) or “I would describe myself as analytical, curious, reserved and independent” (Investigative), etc.
Leaders: As the students give what they perceive as their personality assets and liabilities it will be helpful for you to evaluate whether you feel they have good self-awareness of their tendencies that are associated with their personality type. At times individuals will answer the personality assessment honestly but not have good self-awareness and at times they will answer according to what personality type they desire. Again, you can quickly begin to evaluate whether their results match what they perceive to be assets and liabilities.
Ask the students to reflect and keep a journal on times during the summer where they see being lived out one of the personality strengths and times where they see being lived out one of their growth areas. Also, ask them to reflect and keep a journal on times where they personality is a lived out as an asset or liability in their leadership roles and communication style.
Leaders: It will be invaluable if you built into your schedule a time at the end of the summer where you had the students share with one another this exercise. Also, if you plan to do this let them know at the beginning of the summer you plan to have them share at the end of the summer.
Remember, if you want to know the future understand your past!
Leaders: The links below are two short videos that will help with understanding how to Interpret the PLACE Profile holistically and a practical overview of each of the 16 spiritual gifts explained. Please feel free to pass these links along to the students to watch during their time with SendNowMissions this summer and beyond their time serving with SendNowMissions.
